ChANA is a multi-institutional National Mission Program titled “Characterization of Chickpea Germplasm Resource to Accelerate Genomics-assisted Crop Improvement”, funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. This ambitious initiative brings together 15 participating institutions from ICAR, State Agricultural Universities, and international organizations, with BRIC-NIPGR serving as the coordinating partner. The project aims to comprehensively phenotype and genotype a Pan Genebank Core of 5084 germplasm accessions (from ICRISAT and NBPGR) and 6004 trait-specific genotypes, including pre-breeding lines, genetic stocks, wild Cicer species, and released varieties.

The 18th International Biocuration Conference, held April 5–9 in Kansas City, Missouri, was co-organized with the ISB and hosted at the Stowers Institute. With 135 participants, the event focused on innovations in biocuration, data infrastructure, and the growing impact of AI. Dr. Sonia Balyan (Indian Biological Data Centre) delivered a compelling talk titled “Towards FAIR Phenome: Indian Crop Phenome Database at IBDC”, introducing ICPD as India’s national initiative to make crop phenotypic data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR). She highlighted the team’s work on standardizing metadata, integrating global ontologies, assigning persistent IBDC accessions, and promoting open access to phenome datasets. The presentation elevated international awareness of IBDC’s expanding repository ecosystem and showcased India’s leadership—under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT)—in building self-reliant, FAIR-aligned data infrastructure.
