- Abstract: Two Gram stain positive endospore forming non motile rod shaped bacterial strains SN6T and SN6b were isolated from the scats of a mildly venomous vine snake Ahaetulla nasuta. Both strains exhibited resistance to multiple antibiotics including aminoglycosides beta-lactams fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides. Phenotypically they were catalase positive and oxidase negative. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed a close similarity between SN6T and Savagea faecisuis Con12T 99.2 to 99.3 percent but lower similarity 94.9 percent with other members of the family Planococcaceae DNA-DNA hybridization and whole genome sequence analysis confirmed that strains SN6T and SN6b belong to the same species DNA to DNA relatedness 95 percent but are distinct from S faecisuis Con12T DNA-DNA relatedness 32.8 percent. The genome of SN6T comprised 2637389 bp with 2667 annotated genes including 1021 hypothetical proteins and 1646 functional assignments related to antibiotic resistance multidrug resistance efflux pumps and virulence factors. Comparative genomic and phenotypic analyses differentiated SN6T and SN6b from S faecisuis supporting their classification as a novel species within the genus Savagea The proposed name for this new species is Savagea serpentis sp nov with SN6T KCTC 33546T CCUG 6786T as the type strain. This study highlights the role of polyphasic taxonomy in delineating bacterial species and provides insights into the antibiotic resistance mechanisms of Savagea serpentis.
